Bretonnia is a feudal kingdom to the west of the Empire. It was united in 979 IC by Giles le Breton, the Duke of Bastonne, who was chosen by the Lady of the Lake as her champion and the defender of Bretonnia. Giles gathered his twelve Grail Companions and defeated a massive invasion of Orcs in a series of twelve legendary battles before being crowned at the gates of Couronne.
While Bretonnia was once a land of high chivalry and legendary heroes, the kingdom’s illustrious reputation has diminished greatly in recent years. Misadventure, ill fortune, and poor administration has left Bretonnia struggling against bankruptcy and apathy. Taxes are stiflingly high, fields lie fallow, the cities are overpopulated, dirty, and crime-ridden slums, and the elites are as out-of-touch as ever.
The government of Bretonnia is centralized around the capitol of Guiseroux and especially at the royal palace and hunting lodge at Oisillon, where the adolescent King Charles XIII d’Angevin keeps busy hunting and hawking. The kingdom recently emerged from a period of regency during the king’s minority.
